important parts to make Railway Safety and Stability
Do the wheels on train cars wear out from friction with the rails?Yes, the left and right wheels are attached solidly to the axle, and in a curve the outer wheel has to go further than the inner wheel. this is accommodated by the tires, the part that contacts the track, are machined conical, having a larger diameter on the inside, near the flange, than on the outside, so that in an unbanked curve and at speed the outside wheel slides outward bringing the flange close to the rail and at its larger diameter, while the inner tire flange moves away from the rail, to its smaller diameter. However, when running slowly, like in towns or switching yards, often the wheels are pulled to the inside of the curve so the larger diameter is not going as far as the outside wheel.
